Kurdish (Kurdî, کوردی is the modern designation for a continuum of several different Northwestern Iranian languages within the Indo-European language family and is spoken primarily in Kurdistan, which covers parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Armenia, and Turkey. Kurdish forms three language groups: Kurmanji, Sorani, and Pehlewani. A side language group more distinct from the other language groups is Zaza-Gorani, which is also spoken by several million Kurds. Recent studies estimate that between 20 and 30 million people speak Kurdish as their mother tongue.
